Lopstick Outfitters

History

“of Pittsburg’s oldest continually operating sporting camp”

In the late 1920’s outdoorsman and guide “Long Tom” Currier, built two cabins and opened for business as the Currier Camps, serving meals in the lodge and offering guide service. The Currier Camps are listed as a landmark on many local maps. Stewart Young, for whom our road is named, was the next proprietor/guide to own the property. It is believed he is the one who named the lodge and cabin Lakeview. He also built and rebuilt cabins one through six. Ed and Rhea Ponzek of Lowell, MA were the next owners. They had Lakeview for several years. Ed was famous for his “Kook Book”, a collection of jokes and sayings he had heard over the years.

Nicky and Ron Clermont of “Nicky’s Country Kitchen” were the next owners. Nicky was well known for her wonderful food and sticky buns! In 1985 Ron and Nicky sold to Dennis and Elaine McDermont of RI. Dennis and Elaine changed the name to Lopstick and made many structural improvements. They opened the cabins in the winter to snowmobiles, installed an artesian well, updated the septic, deepened the pond, and built cabins Fish Tales and Bunk House. Then Memorial Day weekend of 1988, they won 3.7 million in the Tri-State Megabucks. They soon decided retirement was a better way of life! They were the last owners to serve meals here. Melody and Chuck Sage owned the lodge for a brief time. Before owning the lodge they owned what is now Guest House.

In May 1991, Tim and Lisa Savard began living the dream of making their home here in the Great North Woods of NH. In 1995 they began offering guide services for fly fishing and bird hunting. They purchased a drift boat in 1997 to expand their guide service. In May of 1999 they renovated the first floor of the lodge to make room for a fly shop and reception area. They did many renovations to cabins and even built/re-built cabins. They purchased the Magalloway Cabins in 2003. They expanded the number of cabins by taking on property-managed cabins like Lakeview, Eastwind, Riffles, Otter Landing, The Camp, and more. In the summer of 2011, they logged-sided the lodge and added a farmer’s porch so guests could sit and enjoy the view!

In April 2013, Roderick and Maryam DeGreef purchased the Lodge, Powderhorn, Metallak Shores, and Harry’s Cabin. In 2021, the DeGreefs purchased the former Youngs Third Generation Repair property to base the continuously expanding recreational rental business. Also, in 2021, the Lopstick Outfitters Fly Shop moved to its new location on Metallak Road, just a half-mile drive north on Route 3. As an Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Outfitter, we offer great Pro Gear and Guided Trips. Lopstick Outfitters has three Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Guides: Bill Bernhardt, Paul Starring, and Chuck DeGray. During October into the beginning of November, the Outfitter also provides Guided Upland Hunting Trips with guides Dave Trahan and Sean Searles.

Rod and Maryam are continuing with the vision to improve the lodge, cabins, and other services offered.
